What is Kinkakuji?
Its official name is Rokuonji, and it is one of the subtemples of Shokokuji.
It is commonly called Kinkaku-ji because its reliquary “Kinkaku” is particularly famous.
It is said that it began when Yoshimitsu Ashikaga, the third shogun of the Muromachi shogunate, took over the villa of Kimitsune Saionji, a court noble during the Kamakura period, and built the mountain villa Kitayamadono. The gardens and architecture centered on the Golden Pavilion are said to have represented the Pure Land of Paradise in this world, and it was the stage where Emperor Gokomatsu, the father of the famous Zen master Ikkyu, was invited, and where trade with China flourished and contributed to the development of culture. The culture of this period is especially called Kitayama culture. After Yoshimitsu’s death, it became a temple according to his will, and Muso Kokushi was the founder, and it was named Rokuon-ji, taking two characters from Yoshimitsu’s Buddhist name, Rokuon-in-dono.
