When was Bishamondo founded?

Tendai sect Gohozan Ankokuin Izumoji Bishamon-do Bishamon-do is a Tendai sect temple that was opened in 703 by Emperor Bunmu. When the temple first opened, it was located near the Izumoji Bridge in Kyoto (to the north of the current imperial palace) and was called Izumo-ji'', but later becameBishamondo”. After overcoming wars and fires, it was rebuilt in its current location in Yamashina in 1665. The temple became a “monzeki temple” after the priest Tenkai, who worked hard to restore Bishamon-do, and his disciple Kokai, and then Emperor Gosai’s son, Prince Koben, joined the temple, and it continues to exist today as one of the Tendai sect’s Kyoto Gokamushi temples. .
The principal image is Bishamonten. Many people call him “Bishamon-san” and have deep faith in him. Other highlights include historical buildings and cultural assets such as the precious main shrine and Karamon gate that still convey the Japanese architecture and atmosphere of the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the beautiful scenery of the precincts, which are rich in nature and are known as a famous spot for viewing cherry blossoms and autumn leaves.

What is Monzeki Temple?
A special temple where members of the imperial family, court nobles, etc. can become priests and become temple lords (monshu) are called monzeki (monzeki). Bishamondo is also one of the temples that has the status of Monzeki temple.
In the Tendai sect, the five temples including Bishamon-do (Myoho-in, Sanzen-in, Shoren-in, Manshu-in, and Bishamon-do) are collectively called the Tendai sect Kyoto Gokamuro Monzeki.

What god is worshiped?

It is said that the principal image of Bishamon-do was carved by Dengyo Daishi Saicho using leftover wood from the carving of Yakushi Nyorai, the principal image of Enryaku-ji Temple on Mt. Hiei, the head temple of the Tendai sect. It is said to be a secret Buddha that has only appeared in front of worshipers once since its principal image was enshrined in Yamashina. It is usually kept in the zushi in the center of the main shrine.
Bishamonten has been worshiped as the god of treasure since ancient times in India. In Buddhism, Buddhism is considered the guardian deity and is responsible for protecting the north direction. In Japan, it is also known as Tamonten, one of the Seven Lucky Gods and the Four Heavenly Kings. Due to its brave appearance, it is believed to bring good luck in competitions, as well as business prosperity, financial fortune, and good fortune.

What is Bishamonten?

The tiger and centipede are often depicted along with Bishamonten. The tiger is known as a closely related animal because of the fact that Bishamonten is a zodiac sign in the direction of the north (Kimon), which it protects, and because Bishamonten appeared in the year of the tiger, the day of the tiger, and the time of the tiger. Also, the bravery and daring of the tiger is similar to Bishamonten in his warrior form.
The centipede is known as the messenger of Bishamonten, and is said to be associated with the safety of one’s family because of its many legs and ability to move forward stably without retreating. We give out “mukade pottery” which symbolizes the blessings of the centipede, and many people ask for one when they visit the shrine.
